It was wonderful to celebrate this important cultural festival on Saturday evening with South East Auckland Senior Citizens' Association Inc. - Seasca. This group does amazing work with local seniors across the year, ensuring our elders aren't left behind. From social gatherings to digital literacy, they're preventing social isolation and ensuring inclusion.
I joined Howick Local Board Chair Bruce Kendall, incoming-Deputy Krish Naidu, and Member Adele White along with Takanini MP Rima Nakhle, Councillor Daniel Newman, and representatives of the Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board. We were entertained by performances from Indian and Chinese groups, while we dined on delicious traditional food and sweets.
Modern India is a federal union made up of 36 regions, each with their own distinct cultural heritage and traditions. Together with the wider global diaspora, Indian culture is diverse and varied. It was wonderful to see many of these represented by different forms of dress and dance, reminding us about the importance of diversity.
Thank you to everyone who organised this wonderful event, including the wonderful performances and delicious food. It was a joy to be able to celebrate with you all.
Happy Diwali!
