Great news for Burswood - new playground coming soon!
Recently the Howick Local Board granted approval for construction of a new playground for Burswood. This will be funded by the Eastern Busway project, as part of the compensation for the impacts of property acquisition and construction.
While the Howick Local Board opposed the diversion of the busway through Burswood, the new route was granted approval. However, it was a condition of that approval that they must "implement the following upgrade in Burswood Park subject to obtaining all necessary approvals:
• a new playground to cater for all abilities and ages,
• improved shade and/or shelter."
The design we approved delivers on this condition, as well as the public consultation with the local community completed in December 2024. From the 82 community consultation responses the main feedback themes included a desire for (in order of preference): more shade and shelter with a focus on shade, more areas for children to play, multi-use court for tai chi, dancing, badminton, pickleball and table tennis, more seating, and more trees and planting.
You’ll see in the concept design that there’s a wide range of equipment that will provide opportunities for more people to enjoy.
The playground will remain open during the school holidays, then close on 27 July for the upgrade. It’s expected to take approximately 10-12 weeks (depending on the weather)
