Celebrating Cultures at Botany Town Centre
On Saturday I attended the opening of Celebrating Cultures Pop-Up at Botany Town Centre, along with fellow Howick Local Board members Adele White, Jack Collins and John Spiller.
We’re fortunate to have an incredibly diverse community in East Auckland and it’s wonderful to celebrate the rich cultural tapestry of our home. Great to see familiar and new groups showcasing their talents and heritage, bringing the town centre alive. The weather meant some of the activities were moved inside, showing the benefits of having the event at a dynamic venue like the Botany Town Centre.
We saw a wide range of performances, including Singaporean lion and dragon dances, traditional and modern Chinese dances, Bollywood dancing, and Korean traditional drumming. Meanwhile, locals engaged with hands on activities like Māori Poi making, Indian henna painting, Chinese Dragon's beard candy making, and Tongan crafts.
This two-week programme of free activities and events is organised by Arts Out East, with funding and support from Te Tuhi, Howick Local Board, and Botany Town Centre.
