Celebrating the Dragon Boat Festival

On Saturday, I attended the Dragon Boat Festival hosted by Botany Chinese Association, along with Howick Local Board Acting-Chair Kai Zeng, and colleagues from neighbouring Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board.

Also known as the Tuen Ng Festival in Hong Kong and Macau, the Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional Chinese holiday originally commemorating Qu Yuan (beloved prime minister of southern Chinese state of Chu around 300 B.C.).

We were entertained with a wide range of performances from traditional Chinese instruments through to modern line dancing. We were gifted zongzi (traditional Chinese rice dish made of glutinous rice stuffed with dates and wrapped in leaves) which I shared with my whānau.

Thank you to everyone who helped organise and deliver this wonderful cultural celebration.
