Weekly Wrap Up: 7 September 2026
Each week I’m providing a quick summary of the meetings and events I’ve attended as a member of the Howick Local Board (HLB). This is my report for last week, starting Monday 7 September.
On Monday I attended a Senior Citizens’ Meeting hosted by Bhartiya Samaj Charitable Trust, at the Old Flat Bush School Hall. This wonderful community organisation runs regular activities for elderly residents, keeping them active, connected, and informed. See more here: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1MpLKKuqNB/
Later that day, I attended the Pest Free Howick Ward Community Advisory Group. With a new project manager at the helm, they’re preparing for another busy year of community activities and events to help tackle pest plants and animals.
On Wednesday I attended a panel on homelessness. We heard from Auckland Council as well as three different charitable organisations providing frontline services to our most vulnerable. It’s a complex issue with many causes and no single solution. But ultimately, it’s about people who deserve respect, regardless of their situation. More detailed write up coming soon.
On Thursday we had our workshop (https://aucklandcouncil.resolve.red/portal/meeting/12294)
📑Draft Local Board Plan - Discussion on the new Transport Section: we reviewed our draft 3yr strategy in light of public feedback, focusing on the transport section. We know more about the new decision-making than when the draft was written and we made sure it covers safety, congestion, active modes, freight, public transport, and footpaths.
🏘️Introduction to community-led centres: closed due to "commercially sensitive material that requires free and frank discussion."
On Saturday I attended the opening of the Lloyd Elsmore Skatepark. It was awesome to see the community turning out to enjoy this fantastic new facility, designed for the community, by the community. See more here.
On Sunday I attended the Community Welcome Day at Flat Bush (temporary) Library, along with Members Adele White, Jack Collins, Krish Naidu, and Peter Young. It was wonderful to see so many community organisations as well as a great turnout from residents. Our temporary library was too small to host it all, so we spread into the Ormiston Town Centre (who are amazing hosts) – proving once again that we need to get the full facilities built ASAP.
